WHO OUTDID THEMSELVES? (THE MET GALA 2016 vs 2017)
by Monjola Adeboye
The theme for the 2016 Met Gala was Fashion in the Age of Technology, while the theme for this year was Rei Kakawubo/Comme des Garçons. Some of the celebrities in attendance outdid themselves, looking fabulous while honoring the 74 year old Japanese designer and Businesswoman, Rei Kakawubo.
Some of the looks from the Red carpet in 2016 versus the looks from last night;
SELENA GOMEZ 2016 vs 2017.
Selena Gomez looked like she grew up in the year between the 2016 event and the 2017 event. Though she did not follow the theme this time around, she looked a thousand times better than she did last year. Her hair and makeup were flawless, and her dress, a long and flowing white dress, reminiscent of Spring showed off her legs beautifully. Her shoes could have been better, seeing as the metallic nudes didn’t do her justice, but we think overall great effort.
JENNIFER LOPEZ 2016 vs 2017.
Jennifer Lopez, as usual slayed the game. She looked mature and majestic in a light blue floor length Valentino dress with a slight train. This look is shades different from her look last year, which was sheer and brought out her amazing figure. She as well neglected to follow the theme, but she looked beautiful in her rebelliousness.
RITA ORA 2016 vs 2017
Rita Ora, words do not do her justice. She followed the theme flawlessly, and although she was not dressed in Comme des Garçons, she found a way to perfectly embody everything that Rei Kakawubo stands for, which is edginess, newness and pushing boundaries.
KATY PERRY 2016 vs 2017.
Katy Perry, a goddess. Her look last year is reminiscent of a dark demon queen, while her look this year, is softer but still edgy. She has the look of a Virgin Mary who just so happened to be dressed in a ton of red tulle. She does not fit the accepted standard of beauty, but she looks effortless in her own way. She followed the theme perfectly. An A star for this virgin vampire queen.
LILY COLLINS MET GALA 2016 vs 2017
Lily Collins looked stunning in this amazing representation of Comme des Garçons. Edgy but soft, with the gothic makeup and the black corset inspired top with a sweetheart neckline, paired with a pale pink tulle ruffled skirt.
KYLIE JENNER MET GALA 2016 vs 2017
Kylie Jenner, what even is there to say about her? She, as usual was dressed in a floor length, sheer and body hugging gown. Where is the fashion girl? Every year she shows up in designs that look the same, and this was no exception. We are so over her look. With all the money her family has, you’d think she’d be able to step it up. Do better.
LUPITA NYONG’O MET GALA 2016 vs 2017.
Lupita slayed last year, but let us all down this year. We think her orange dress was underwhelming. The ruffled top was promising, but the bottom was nothing to write home about. We all expected a lot more from her. Hopefully she isn’t losing her touch.
ZENDAYA MET GALA 2016 vs 2017
Zendaya was another crowd favorite who let down her fans. The theme was Comme des Garçons not Diane Von Furstenberg. She looked beautiful, but in a Disney princess sort of way. Actually, her dress is reminiscent of Snow White in the popular Disney animation, but it wasn’t right for the occasion. She didn’t adequately honour Rei Kakawubo. We expected better from you Daya.
SOLANGE MET GALA 2016 vs 2017
Solange as always, was otherworldly in her dressing. From last year to this year, she set her outfit to follow the Gala theme, while keeping with her personal aesthetic as a surrealist otherworldly creature.
ZOE KRAVITZ MET GALA 2016 vs 2017
Zoe Kravitz, an ethereal goddess. From the platinum blonde pixie cut to the baby pink and black gown, Zoe Kravitz looked ah-mazing. Such an improvement from last years fairy look witht he mask and the butterfly wings. She grew up and looks quite mature but still manages to maintain a certain youthful quality. Well done girl.
